Sophia Zen Center in South Bend follows in the tradition of the Sanbo Zen lineage, also referred to as the Harada-Yasutani lineage.
This lineage incorporates aspects of both Soto and Rinzai traditions, with its home zendo in Kamakura, Japan.
(See web https://ssl.sanbo-zen.org/ for links to a worldwide network of Zen and Zen Teachers.)
"Sophia Zen Center" began as part of the Thomas Merton Society and became Sophia Zen Center in 1990.
Zen is awakening to the dynamic reality of the present moment (Eastern Wisdom - Prajna) and living a life of compassion that manifests that awakening (Embodying the Way).
Sophia expresses the Western World Wisdom: knowing beyond intellectual knowledge with connotations of a nurturing, ordering, feminine ground of Being, the Core of our Being.
Zazen is sitting Zen, the formal practice
of Zen or Zen meditation.
